I don't really have a huge amount to say about my rest day in Sarria. It has been wonderful catching up with my friend from the USA and this catching up has been accompanied by substantial portions of food. Last night's dinner was a great case in point - we thought we were having a small veal steak and ended up with an enormous t-bone steak. This was only the second great piece of meat that I have had on the Way.
Following a slow breakfast this morning, we spent some time looking at the days ahead. There's not much point racing out the door here, as nothing opens until 10am. We slowly meandered through the commercial district, gazing in shop windows and admiring buildings. Eventually, we climbed the hill at the centre of the town, which is the historical centre of the city. Our first stop was the old monastery, which featured an impressive stone floor in the cloister and an impressive chapel. Next, we admired the one tower remaining of the medieval castle, a Romanesque church, and the town-scape.
Following this bit of tourism, we returned yo the hotel so that I could grab my shoes. I real need new insoles. I have worn mine down to next to nothing. The task of purchasing these new insoles was amazingly simple, once I had googled the Spanish word for them.
Again, we climbed the hill. It was lunch time and we wanted to return to the restaurant where we ate so well yesterday. Assuredly, we ate as well today! After this long lunch, it was time for the rest in rest-day.
I leapt out of bed at around 5pm so as to make the 6pm Mass in the church up the hill. For about the tenth time today, I climbed the steep hill of the town to arrive at the church. Having been there for Mass yesterday, you would imagine that I would remember the time. On arriving, I discovered (or rediscovered) that Mass is at 7.30pm and not 6pm! So, it was back down the hill again to waste some time before church. I am really looking forward to climbing the hill once more this evening and then first thing tomorrow morning.
Adios!
